The California Carpet Stewardship Program recommends including the language below in applicable construction and demolition bids to ensure that carpet is diverted from landfill and recycled.
Recommended Bid Language
All projects that generate post-consumer carpet materials must ensure proper handling and recycling. This can be achieved through two primary options: participation in a carpet mill take-back program or utilizing reuse/recycling services offered by an approved third-party organization. Proper preparation not only aids in the recycling process but also helps to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Broadloom carpet:
- Cut broadloom carpet and padding into manageable pieces (3-5’ widths)
- Roll carpet and wrap with string or tape
- Roll or fold padding separately from carpet and wrap with string or tape
Carpet Tile:
- Sort carpet tile by manufacturer and backing type
- Stack carpet tile 4 feet high on a standard pallet
- Wrap with plastic film
- Secure tile to pallet with strapping
- Carpet tile may be collected loose in some areas for an additional fee.
Carpet that is wet or smoke damaged cannot be recycled.
Area rugs are not recyclable under this Program.
