More carpet can be diverted from landfill if agencies included carpet recycling language in local ordinances. Government agencies should insert one or both of the options below to ensure that carpet recycling is included in C&D ordinances.
Recommended C&D Ordinance Language:
- Source Separation:
All construction and deconstruction materials shall be source separated at the job site. Materials to be source separated for recycling include, but are not limited to, steel, glass, brick, concrete, asphalt, roofing material, pipe, gypsum, sheetrock, lumber, wood, pallets, rocks, sand, soil, clean cardboard, paper, plastic, carpet, wood and metal scraps. - Mixed/Commingled Material:
All C&D debris material shall be placed into a single container or containment system. Materials shall be brought to a facility that will sort the commingled material for recycling, re-use, and recovery.
